Poem Of The Day: My First Tanka

Poem Of The Day #56

April storm last night,
fallen petals this morning.
Pink flowers everywhere
hide beaten pathways.
Slip and fall-- hands slimy, pants wet.
A beautiful annoyance.

I used to write a poem or two once in a while, and then I stopped since my poems were so bad. Now after a one-year hiatus, I feel that my grasp on the language is not as good as before. I feel that my decision of not writing bad poems has an unintended consequence--I don't read as many poems as before. Since English is not my native language, I need a constant supply of phrases, like those provided in poems, to make my brain feel comfortable. It's like marinating my unwilling brain in a language sauce, or something like that. Now I am thinking that I should go back to write bad poems again.

  1. Dang. I didn’t know English wasn’t your first language or that you suffered with it. I get scared writing in other languages and feel unsafe writing poetry in it, but I wouldn’t improve if I didn’t. You’ll get better. This is still an amazing poem too.

  2. Beautiful lines, Haoyan. Don’t stop writing these. Waiting for more… 🙂
I have a poem of yours that I was supposed to make a video for. Remember? Sorry that it’s been so long. I hope you still allow me a chance to do that. It’s a lovely one. 🙂
And send me a poem for MasticadoresIndia. Hurry up! 🙂

    1. Oh, yes, you just reminded me of that. Don’t worry. I know it is too much work to add music to that poem, which is not very musical to begin with. I know you are very busy. Yes, I will try to submit a poem. LOL. I think I will have some inspiration this week.
