Just by pure accident, I discovered a historical K Drama dubbed in Spanish on YouTube, which has 20 episodes, each about 45 minutes. What a find. It makes Spanish more interesting to learn. In addition, this particular K Drama is not as good as those I watched before (actually quite a bad one), which makes it even better for language learning. The conversations are very simple and ridiculously repetitive and delightfully predictable. I think probably those Spanish language schools can use this drama as their training material. Anyway, I like all K Dramas, good or bad. Watching one episode a day is such a pleasure, much better than watching other Spanish material.
I actually tried to watch Spanish telenovelas before. It is said that they are very popular and very addictive. However I couldn’t get into it. It really baffled me why this is the case. I like many different type of stories, and if so, why not telenovelas? I don’t know why. After three or four attempts, each ten minutes or so, of watching a family drama, a psychiatrist office, and a mafia story, I had to give up all telenovelas for the time being. Maybe in the future, when I get more used to it, I will be able to enjoy it.
Probably because I haven’t found the best telenovela. Probably I was not used to the style. Now to think of it, I have to say I can’t remember I ever watched one Spanish or Latin American movie or TV series, dubbed or not dubbed, in my life. Actually I’ve never thought about it. You would think that with a big Latino population in America, one will encounter one or two Spanish movies or shows from time to time, but I’ve never had a chance. There are Spanish TV channels, but we don’t watch them. I recognize actors like Penelope Cruz or Antonio Banderas, but they usually speak English in the movies I watch.
It is all about our habit. I mean I grew up watching some Japanese, Korean movies. And I have no problem getting into them. Then in college, I watched some Taiwanese, Vietnamese, French, or Italian movies, but I couldn’t get into them. I don’t know why. Actually in college, I had a friend who was into movies by Ingmar Bergman and an Italian director (name forgotten), and he was trying to get me interested in them, but I just couldn’t. After college, I had a friend who tried to get me interested in Star Trek, but I just couldn’t get into science fictions.
Why do we like certain foreign productions but not others? It has no explanation.

I understand where you come from. I think this all has to do with what we were exposed to first and our interests before we can watch anything. There were times I would watch a Soviet movie, many I can recommend, with my dad and he would just get up and leave the room.
When it comes to watching some Indian films, I can only get into a certain kind and not much else.
