Nothing To Write Today

I have nothing to write today. I subscribe to the theory that one should write something even if one has nothing to write. So I am going to describe some random thoughts.

Prediction Of This Winter

It is said this winter is going to be a tough one for this area since the cold air from Canada will battle the warm jet stream from the Gulf of Mexico, which would come up all the way along the East Coastline. Plus the unusually warm Atlantic Ocean will add another layer of turmoil.

I hope the prediction is not correct and we are going to be spared of the fury of a warming globe.

Online Personality

Have you ever found that you can sense people’s personality through watching their videos. I have been watching a little beginner Spanish videos and I have been subconsciously comparing the teachers’ personalities. One is very formal while another is casual; one likes books and another enjoys outdoors; one is content and another is not; one can be a hard grader while another can give everybody an “A”. Of course these are just vague impressions. I can very well be wrong in my estimation. And as a person growing up in a narcissistic household, I know that I am a person who tend to make mistakes when reading people. I often mistake etiquette for warmth, lap up any praise without considering the underlying intention, become flattered with any gesture of friendship, feel a false connection when talking with a narcissist. Since all my relatives are narcissists, it is easy for me to feel a familiarity with people of similar traits.

The Women’s Room & In The Name Of Friendship

I am reading “The Women’s Room” right now and it is such a good book. I should have read it long time ago. I read another book of the author, “In The Name Of Friendship”, which is also good, but it is not nearly as good as “The Women’s Room”.

I should have read this book years ago. I mean this book should be a textbook for women who want to know more about women’s life and who want to debunk the myth they have learned growing up. I want to finish my book review on Plath and write reviews on these two books once I finish.

Movie “Barbie”

I haven’t been paying attention to movies for the past several years, and then I read an online post which said that “Barbie” had caused a storm in Asia–women would watch it several times while many men would storm out of the movie theaters, leaving their date watching the movie alone. I haven’t watched it yet, and I’ve lost the habit of going to movie theaters for years. However I think I am going to watch it as soon as it comes to Amazon or YouTube. I am wondering what is in the script or the plot of “Barbie” that can upset some men. Usually men fall sleep or get bored by a romantic comedy. And what is different with this movie?

Anyway, it is said it is a global blockbuster, which is going to pass the one billion dollar mark this weekend. And it is totally unexpected. Usually a romantic comedy is not so wildly popular. Only an action movie or a sci-fi fantasy can be so well liked.

Although I haven’t watched it, I somehow can sense its new femininity concept, which is wildly appealing to women.

As you know, most of the romantic comedies or romantic books or romantic sitcoms (or any serious creation with a romantic tag on it) in the past are actually tragedies that wear a happy ending outfit. There are a few exceptions to this rule of course. But most are just tragedies. For example, “Pretty Woman”, “My Best Friend’s Wedding”, “Pride & Prejudice”, “Cinderella”, “Nanny”, “Friends”, “Sex And The City”, most of the romances in the wave of K Drama, and many many more. They should be called “Love Can’t Fit In” rather than romances.

I am glad things have been changing. And I hope there are more “Barbies” coming our way.

  1. Yes – all you need to do is start writing, then one thing follows another. I have often found that. One just needs an initial trigger.

I hardly ever watch movies either – I guess I feel they’re mostly not made for my age group. (Either that or they’re an excuse to get some wear out of the filmmakers’ seemingly bottomless wardrobe of 1940s clothing – see Oppenheimer. I call these “sleeveless pullover dramas”.)

In the case of Barbie I feel that the publicity poster tells me all I need to know. Barbie looks attractive but Ken has a silly haircut and silly clothes. I just feel this is going to be another outing for the tired trope of empowered women and feckless babyish men – but I could be wrong. I don’t blame women for trying to turn the tables on men – I would do the same if I were a woman – but the ways in which it’s done can get a bit cliched.

I may be committing the cardinal error of “judging a book by its cover”!

  2. I haven’t seen Barbie but it’s definitely drawing in the crowds here with people going to see it, dressed in pink. Lots of different opinions from the thinking lot, one being that Ken is the real winner in the movie.
