New Word: From The News

New Word #108

ghosting: It is said more than 10% of the new hires are ghosting their employer, meaning they don’t show up for work and do not give notifications.

great resignation: It means that many people have volunteered to resign from jobs since the beginning of 2021.

gift economy: This means people exchange household items and necessities without any money involved. Due to the inflation, many people start to gift each other items–sort of like bartering in the prehistorical time before money was invented.

freegan: Freegans are people who minimize their participation in the market economy, minimize their waste, minimize consumption.

defamation: The damaging behavior of destroying somebody’s reputation. I learned this word from the ongoing defamation trial, in which Johnny Depp is sueing his ex-wife Amber Heard. I don’t usually follow news like this. However, recently I started to watch videos about narcissism and one psychologist has several videos explaining the psychology of the relationship between Depp and his ex-wife. It is very interesting.

microplastic: small pieces of plastics in the air and in the water, which come from the disposal consumer products and waste. It is said such plastics can show up in the bloodstream of mammals or fish.

vtuber: According to Wikipedia, vtuber is a virtual YouTuber and an online entertainer who uses a virtual avatar generated using computer graphics.

monkeypox: It is said monkeypox can also be transmitted through air but only when in close contact.

flying monkey: It is said a narcissist often recruits flying monkeys as their assistants who would plague the victim for the narcissist. So if you start acting hostile towards people after hearing rumors and gossip about them, you might be unwittingly helping a narcissist to abuse his or her victims.

grey rock: The grey rock method involves communicating in an uninteresting way when interacting with abusive or manipulative people.

love bombing: A narcissist will often lavish someone with attention or affection, especially in order to influence or manipulate them.

narcissistic supply: Narcissistic supply refers to the constant supply of attention and admiration needed by narcissists.

  1. I used to describe myself as a narcissist back when they seemed less disgraceful. I hope my self awareness disqualifies me from being one and that I can begin describing myself as merely self absorbed and self centered as I continue to mellow. 😎

    1. Oh, you are the best grandfather. You are very helpful. Narcissists are very different. They bully people, they scapegoat people, they recruit flying monkeys. It is said, at least by one psychologist, that narcissists are genetic, about 1 to 2% of the population. These people are very toxic in a family environment. If one unluckily gets into a relationship with a narcissist, one has to run as far away as one can.

  2. Really interesting post. I had recently been watching some videos about “love bombing” and I realised someone in my life used to do that but luckily we no longer communicate with one another.

  3. There are several there that I’ve not come across before. “Grey rock” intrigues me. I think I sometimes do that instinctively if I’m trying to defuse somebody’s emotions. You could also describe it as communicating in a “matter of fact” way. It also reminds me of the Father Stone character who features in one of the episodes of the Irish sitcom “Father Ted”. He is so boring that people don’t even register what he says.
