I am a little surprised there are quite a lot of words about friendship. I think there are more, and let me know if I miss any. These are all regularly used words.

brotherhood: 1 : the state of being a brother. 2 : a group of people who are engaged in the same business or have a similar interest. 3 : feelings of friendship, support, and understanding between people.
sidekick: a person’s assistant or close associate, especially one who has less authority than that person.
confidant:a person with whom one shares a secret or private matter, trusting them not to repeat it to others.
pal: a good friend
soul mate: a person ideally suited to another as a close friend or romantic partner.
acquaintance: a person one knows slightly, but who is not a close friend.
bestie: (informal) a person’s best friend.
frenemy: (informal) a person who is or pretends to be a friend but who is also in some ways an enemy
BFF: a person’s best friend.
chum: a close friend
amigo: a friend
beau: a boyfriend or male admirer.

Great post as always. I didn’t realise there were so many friendship words until you put them all together like this.

Thank you. Yes, there are quite a lot of them. How much we love our friends.

Truly. I think some friends become more like family than actual family members.

Nice ones, Haoyan. I think you’ve got it pretty much covered. Friendship often invents new and chummy terms. I think we’ll be seeing new ones popping up in the future. 🙂

True. I mean friendships take many different forms and there will be more names popping up.

May I offer some Cockney (inner London, especially working class areas) rhyming slang ? Friend = my old china, as in: “Hello, my old china.” This comes the adjective phrase ‘china plate’ which rhymes with ‘mate’ and mate means friend. Note the lower case ‘c’ in ‘china’ because it refers to a plate made of percaline (china) NOT from the country China.

So women can be part of a brotherhood but we can’t be part of the sisterhood! I’d like to appeal 😅
Great Post amigo👍

Me too. It could be sarcasm. I didn’t know this until a while ago. I’ve never heard anybody use it.

Haha. I know two friends who are addicted to TikTok, but I haven’t had time to try it yet. Is it really better than YouTube?

I deleted the app after a week because I could feel myself getting addicted and my attention span getting shorter and shorter…
I think Youtube is better.

Oh, I have to tell you I have a friend who’s addicted to it and he spends all his spare time on it, while his wife spends all her time on another social media. It is a social media crazed family.

oh dang! That reminds me of when I used to wait tables at a restaurant, sometimes couples would dine together and although it was obviously a dinner date, they would hardly look at each other for the whole meal. Both glued to their phones.
